From A.D. - Varsity/JV Football

Parents and Student Athletes of Cheyenne Mountain,

It is no longer in the best interest of our young men to participate in a
varsity football contest. Subsequently, a decision has been made to cancel
the remaining two scheduled varsity games with Coronado and Pueblo West.
Previous discussion with our athletic trainer, administration and the
coaching staff began on Monday September 15, with continued assessment
taking place on subsequent Mondays since that date.  Consideration of
eligibility, injuries and overall program numbers led to this decision.
Continuing to play a varsity schedule with our remaining players would not
be appropriate for the safety of those 12-13 players. The final two C-Team
contests remaining on the schedule will include all sophomores and
freshman who are physically healthy and academically eligible to

For those questioning the future of our program, doing what is best for
the student athletes at CMHS is our single most important responsibility.
We will be reviewing EVERY aspect within this program to best determine
change necessary to bring forth success within CMHS Football.  I am
confident that adjustments will be made in several facets resulting in the
desired outcome.

It has come to my attention that dialogue regarding the possibility of
CMHS playing 3A Football is taking place within our community.  Please be
aware there is a process that the state association has provided allowing
teams to seek reclassification. Petitioning to play 3A football must
happen in concert with the scheduling cycles.  As we are currently
finishing year 1 of a 2 year scheduling cycle, the opportunity to
participate in 3A will not be available to CMHS until the fall of 2016.
Below you will find enrollment counts for football classification as well
as the bylaw that list the criteria qualifying a program to apply for
"play down" status. The CHSAA Constitution and By-Laws are also attached
should you desire to access the information in its entirety.

Football Classification Numbers 2014-2016

A-6 (1-75)
A-8 (76-135)
1A (136-300)
2A (301-599)
3A (600-1049)
4A (1050-1609)
5A (1610-up)

EXCEPTION 2: A school may apply to the CLOC to play down one
classification in team sports and qualify for the playoffs, if the
following conditions are met:

The sport has had a combined varsity winning percentage of less than .250
for the previous four seasons.

The play down will be approved for one classification cycle.

The school must show evidence that success will be limited if
participation is in the regular classification.

A recommendation from a receiving league/conference must accompany the

The school shall not be approved to play down for a second consecutive
cycle if either of the below occurred:

during the two year cycle, the team qualified for post season play; or

during the two year cycle, the team win percentage was at or above 50%
